jen_cordaro01“The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy” ~ Kalu Kalu

I hunt the woods, deserts, and foothills in solitude… but that does not make me an Extreme Huntress. These acts simply define me a huntress doing what I love—for me. Hunting makes up a small part of who I am, but dictates a lot of the choices I make. In truth, I’m not the best huntress if one were to look at ranking someone based on number of harvests, places hunted, scores, or years in the field. To me, those statistics serve as a poor baseline for judging someone as an Extreme Huntress.

I believe my responsibility as a steward of the land, a conservationist, an advocate, a volunteer, a wildlife manager, a teacher, and being a positive role model for youth make me an Extreme Huntress. Being an Extreme Huntress should have nothing to do with ego because in my opinion, hunting should never involve ego. My legacy has little to do with the harvest and everything to do with being a torchbearer of traditions, legacy and memory for the next generation.

The hunting legacy is not just about you or me; it is about “us”—a community with a specific history and an unknown future given our political climate. To me, being an Extreme Huntress is about building bridges, making connections, protecting rights, honoring tradition, carrying on heritage, and reclaiming real food through real relationships—It is about putting the greater good of community before our egos. Being passionate about what I do has helped me to dedicate my life to the outdoors and preserving the hunter’s legacy. I have hunted over 30 species, 80% by bow and 20% by shotgun and have spent around 6,000 hours (250 days or 77 hours per week) in the last year and a half dedicated to hunting and the outdoors. I participate in community building, volunteering with conservation organizations, outdoor industry promotion, teaching archery, and organizing youth hunts.

My love for the outdoors not only dictates how I spend my free time but it has also led me to my career choice focusing on preserving hunters’ heritage. I am currently completing a PhD program in Public Policy with a focus on pro-hunting policy and community building. I am the Co-Founder of the Bring A Kid Campaign, a program to bring youth into the outdoors to hunt, fish and shoot. I have written for RMEF, U.S.S.A., and Harvesting Nature. I almost forgot to mention: I picked up my first bow a year and a half ago to fill a bucket list item to bowhunt a pig. I never intended to become a hunter or an archer but I fell in love and the rest is history. The thing I like most about my love story is that I became a huntress without being born into it, without the persuasion of a man, all while being a city-dwelling woman in Southern California. I hope that this love story inspires others to follow their dreams because if I can do it, anyone can!

News/Newspaper Coverage:
There are dozens of articles and local and national news broadcasts both domestically and internationally that speak to the anti-hunting smear campaign launched against me this year for my work with youth. Some I agreed to interview for and some I did not. The news reached all corners of the world including the UK, India, Taiwan, France, Brazil, and so on. While I do not see these things as accolades or achievements, I do see them as an important part of what has shaped my ideals and passion in hunting. Likewise, I believe that taking a stance is important for the continuation of our sport and heritage as hunters. This experience has helped me to form more concrete thoughts and points of action to preserve the hunting tradition. It also has provided me a firm platform in which to inspire youth and get them involved in forming their own opinions and views about hunting. I am not going to list any of the news broadcasts and articles (a simple Google search will reveal dozens of stories) except this one newspaper article that I feel represents most of the stories out there.

To gain a better understanding of your hunting experience, please provide us with details on what you’ve hunted and where you’ve been (whether you were successful or not).

Note: I hunt every season that I have access to hunt and generally I hunt throughout the entire season, not just single trips. I only became a hunter a year and a half ago and therefore I only have one big out of state hunting trip under my belt but I have some larger trips planned for this year and next that I am very excited about. I’ve included these planned trips at the bottom of the hunt log.
